Direct Ph.D./Ph.D.
Ph.D. :
Program The Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering offers selected candidates the opportunity to pursue doctoral level research leading to the Ph.D. degree. The Ph.D. candidate carries out research work in one of the research areas of interest (specialization) of the Department under the guidance of a faculty member.
A few research scholars sponsored by recognized R&D organizations are also admitted to pursue the MS/PhD programs. Most of them carry out the major part of their research work as External Research Scholar in their own organizations
Syllabus for M.S./Ph.D. Interviews (D Ph.D. syllabus is same as M.S.)
M.S.
Master of Science Program
The M.S. program of IIT Madras is the Masters level research program carried out under the guidance of a faculty member of the respective Department.
The student (called Research Scholar (RS)) undertakes a few courses with a view to better understand the broad areas of his research work. On successfully completing the research work and producing the work in a thesis, the student earns the MS degree. The quality of the MS thesis is such that research publications usually result from them.

5-Year Dual Degree Program
This program enables an engineering student to develop skills that help him to acquire and apply new scientific knowledge from diverse engineering fields. With this foresight and by virtue of its interdisciplinary composition, the Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras has introduced a unique interdisciplinary Dual Degree Program along with the Departments of Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Ocean Engineering.
On successfully completing 5 years, the students of this program earn dual degrees:
- B.Tech. in Aerospace/Civil/Electrical/Ocean Engineering and
- M.Tech. in Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering with appropriate specialization.
M.Tech.
2-Year M.Tech. Program
This program brings together the broad disciplines of Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering into a single fold with specialization in respective areas. Candidates from a wide range of Engineering disciplines (see table) are eligible to apply.
The first semester is common for all students. Based on the performance in the first semester and their individual preference, students will be allotted 4 HTTA fellowships in each of the three specialization groups. In the second year, the students will work on a research project in the area of specialization, which they have chosen. Curriculum Details

Joint Degree Programs
For the Academic Year 2021-2022 and onwards, the Joint Degree Program at IIT Madras will be coordinated by the Department of Applied Mechanics(https://apm.iitm.ac.in/) & Biomedical Engineering Group (https://apm.iitm.ac.in/bio_medical.html).
A Joint Degree Programs by:
- Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM)
- Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology Trivandrum (SCTIMSTT)
- Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC)
The M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering
Curriculum and the Ph.D. (major: Biomedical Devices and Technology)
Curriculum programmes aim to develop capable people, who will go further to make significant contributions as high-level engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, academicians, etc. in the relevant areas. It is a unique undertaking and exploits the innate strengths and facilities of the three institutes — SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organizations together hold strong backgrounds in Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.
For Eligibility and Admissions details:
Participating Institutes:
- Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM)
- Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology Trivandrum (SCTIMSTT)
- Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC)
Coordinators:
- Prof. Arun Thittai, Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras (akthittai@iitm.ac.in)

The M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering) programme (MCE) has an innovative approach of combining formal engineering training with hands-on clinical exposure. It is a unique undertaking and will exploit the innate strengths and facilities of the three institutes – SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organizations together hold strong backgrounds in Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.

Placement Scenario
The placement opportunities are excellent in hospitals as well as in biomedical device companies. The scope for higher studies (Ph.D.), both in India and abroad, is also bright. All the students who have graduated thus far from the program have been placed through the placement offices and efforts at IIT Madras and SCTIMST. They have been placed in hospitals, medical device industries, and some have opted to go for a Ph.D., typically abroad.
Ph.D. Biomedical Devices and Technology
The aim of this programme is to train engineers to carry out research and development in the field of biomedical devices and technology. This training would enable them
To be leaders in research and development
To be innovators and entrepreneurs in biomedical technology
The students will study and train at all the three participating Institutes.
Application Procedure
The selection will be done once a year on an all-India basis, through a screening test and/or a personal interview of eligible candidates. If needed, the syllabus for the screening test will be sent to eligible candidates well before the test.
Interested candidates can apply for the JDP Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology) program through the IIT Madras Research Admissions
https://research.iitm.ac.in/Online Portal for the Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras.
It may be helpful to note that the selected candidates who join the program will work on a thesis with two guides – one from any Department at IIT Madras, and the other, a suitable collaborator, by mutual agreement between the guides, from either SCTIMST or CMC. Thus, the student will have a significant choice in the thesis topic.
