The Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering offers candidates selected via the department's admission process the opportunity to pursue doctoral level research leading to a Ph.D. degree. The Ph.D. candidate carries out research work in one of the research areas of the department under the guidance of a faculty member.
Research scholars sponsored by recognized R&D organizations are also admitted to pursue the MS/PhD programs. Most sponsored scholars carry out the major part of their research work as External Research Scholars in their own organization.

The M.S. program of IIT Madras is an unique Masters level research program carried out under the guidance of a faculty member.
The student/research scholar undertakes courses with a focus on understanding their research area. On successfully completing the research work and producing the work in a thesis, the student earns the MS degree. It is expected that the MS thesis is of a quality that research publications usually result from them.

5-Year Dual Degree Program
The Inter-Disciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) program enables an undergraduate engineering student from diverse engineering fields to develop skills that help them to acquire and apply new scientific knowledge. By virtue of our department's interdisciplinary composition, the Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras has introduced a unique program along with the Departments of Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Ocean Engineering.

On successfully completing 5 years, the student of this program earns two degrees:
2-Year M.Tech. Program
The flagship Masters degree program of the department brings together the broad disciplines of Solid
Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics &
Biomedical Engineering into a single fold with specialization in respective areas. Candidates from a
wide range of engineering disciplines are eligible to apply. The eligibility details and the admission procedure are available in the M.Tech admissions portal.
The first semester is common for all students irrespective of their specialization. Based on the performance in the first semester and their individual preference, students will be allotted 4 Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) in each of the three specialization groups. In the second year, the students will work on a research project in the area of specialization which they have chosen.
M.Tech. Curriculum
From the academic year 2021-2022 onwards, the Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical
Engineering Group coordinates the Joint Degree Programs related to Biomedical engineering at IIT Madras.
Participating institutes
M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering (click here for curriculum) and the Ph.D. (Major: Biomedical Devices and
Technology, click here for curriculum) programmes aim to develop students, who will go
further to make
significant contributions as high-level engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, academicians,
etc. in the relevant areas. It is a unique undertaking and exploits the innate strengths and
facilities of the three
institutes — SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organizations together hold strong backgrounds in
Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.

The students will study and train at all the three participating Institutes.
The M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering) programme (MCE) has an innovative approach of combining formal engineering training with hands-on clinical exposure. It is a unique undertaking and will exploit the innate strengths and facilities of the three institutes – SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organizations together hold strong backgrounds in Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.

Placements
The placement opportunities are excellent in hospitals as well as in biomedical device
companies. The
scope for higher studies (Ph.D.), both in India and abroad, is also bright. All the students who
have
graduated thus far from the program have been placed through the placement offices and efforts
at IIT
Madras and SCTIMST. They have been placed in hospitals, medical device industries, and some have
opted
to go for a Ph.D., typically abroad.
Ph.D. Biomedical Devices and Technology
The aim of this programme is to train engineers to carry out research and development in the field of biomedical devices and technology. This training would enable them
Application Procedure
The selection will be done once a year on an all-India basis, through a screening test and/or a personal interview of eligible candidates. If needed, the syllabus for the screening test will be sent to eligible candidates well before the test.
Interested candidates can apply for the JDP Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology) program through the IIT Madras Research Admissions https://research.iitm.ac.in/Online Portal for the Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras.
It may be helpful to note that the selected candidates who join the program will work on a thesis with two guides – one from any Department at IIT Madras, and the other, a suitable collaborator, by mutual agreement between the guides, from either SCTIMST or CMC. Thus, the student will have a significant choice in the thesis topic.
