DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MECHANICS
& BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING Indian Institute Of Technology Madras

Fluid Mechanics

Fluid mechanics group, a part of the Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras.

It was established in 1960's with initial grants and equipments from Germany. The laboratory has facilities for experimental and computational research in fluid mechanics; the focus of the laboratory is turbulence and external flows.

The laboratory has many low speed wind tunnels and specialized research tunnels that can also be used for calibration and testing projects. The group is now in the process of expanding its research areas. The laboratory usually has 10 graduate students pursuing Masters and Doctoral research.

We also offer a course based masters (M.Tech.) degree program. In addition to research, the faculty of the laboratory are also involved in teaching of undergraduate core courses to all the branches of IIT. The faculty also offer advanced graduate level courses in fluid mechanics and conduct short term programmes on various areas of fluid mechanics.
