The department offers doctoral level research program leading to a Ph.D. degree to both undergraduate (towards Direct Ph.D.) and graduate candidates (towards Ph.D.). The Ph.D. candidate carries out research work in one of the research areas of the department under the guidance of a faculty member. Direct Ph.D. candidate is required to credit a minimum of 8 courses while a regular Ph.D. candidate is required to credit a minimum of 4 courses aligned with their research work. The research areas of the faculty can be found here.
Research scholars sponsored by recognised R&D organisations are also admitted to pursue the Ph.D. programs.
Look at the Graduate Admission page for requirements and details of the admission process.
The M.S. program is a Masters level research program carried out under the guidance of a faculty member. Research scholar is required to credit a minimum of 4 courses aligned with their research work. The typical duration of this program is 2.5 years and results in a thesis. The research areas of the faculty can be found here.
Research scholars sponsored by recognised R&D organisations are also admitted to pursue the M.S. programs.

The Inter-Disciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) program enables an undergraduate engineering student from diverse engineering fields to develop skills that help them to acquire and apply new scientific knowledge. Our department coordinates the following specialisations offered as part of the IDDD program: 1) Biomedical Engineering, 2) Complex systems & Dynamics, 3) Computational Engineering and 4) Energy Systems. Click here to know more about the different specialisations.
2-Year M.Tech. Program
The flagship Masters degree program of the department brings together the broad disciplines of Solid
Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics &
Biomedical Engineering into a single fold with specialisation in respective areas. Candidates from a
wide range of engineering disciplines are eligible to apply.
The first semester is common for all students irrespective of their specialisation. Based on the performance in the first semester and their individual preference, students will be allotted 4 Half-Time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) in each of the three specialisation groups. In the second year, the students will work on a research project in the area of specialisation which they have chosen.
The eligibility requirements and the admission procedure are available in the M.Tech admissions portal.
M.Tech. Curriculum
From the academic year 2021-2022 onwards, the department coordinates the Joint Degree Programs related to Biomedical engineering at IIT Madras.
Participating institutes
M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering (click here for curriculum) and the Ph.D. (Major: Biomedical Devices and
Technology, click here for curriculum) programmes aim to develop students, who will go
further to make
significant contributions as high-level engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, academicians,
etc. in the relevant areas. It is a unique undertaking and exploits the innate strengths and
facilities of the three
institutes — SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organisations together hold strong backgrounds in
Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.
Eligibility and Admissions details:
Coordinators
The selection will be done once a year on an all-India basis, through a centralized M.Tech. admission process conducted by IIT Madras. For selection and admission details click here: http://mtechadm.iitm.ac.in/.The M.Tech. programme will be two years duration. The students will study and train at all the three participating Institutes.
The M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering) programme (MCE) has an innovative approach of combining formal engineering training with hands-on clinical exposure. It is a unique undertaking and will exploit the innate strengths and facilities of the three institutes – SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organizations together hold strong backgrounds in Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.

Placements
The placement opportunities are excellent in hospitals as well as in biomedical device
companies. The
scope for higher studies (Ph.D.), both in India and abroad, is also bright. All the students who
have
graduated thus far from the program have been placed through the placement offices and efforts
at IIT
Madras and SCTIMST. They have been placed in hospitals, medical device industries, and some have
opted
to go for a Ph.D., typically abroad.
Ph.D. Biomedical Devices and Technology
The aim of this programme is to train engineers to carry out research and development in the field of biomedical devices and technology. This training would enable them
Application Procedure
The selection will be done once a year on an all-India basis, through a screening test and/or a personal interview of eligible candidates. If needed, the syllabus for the screening test will be sent to eligible candidates well before the test.
Interested candidates can apply for the JDP Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology) program through the IIT Madras Research Admissions https://research.iitm.ac.in/Online Portal for the Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras.
It may be helpful to note that the selected candidates who join the program will work on a thesis with two guides – one from any Department at IIT Madras, and the other, a suitable collaborator, by mutual agreement between the guides, from either SCTIMST or CMC. Thus, the student will have a significant choice in the thesis topic.
